Creative Aging: Increasing Older Adults' Engagement in the Arts
Wednesday, Nov. 7, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

As life expectancy increases and the Baby Boomers inch toward retirement, Americans increasingly expect to live active lives well into their golden years. New research indicates that sustained participation in professionally-led, participatory music and arts programs can promote health and prevent disease in older adults—and that each of us can continue to learn throughout our lives. Community arts education organizations are well poised to serve older adults across the well-to-frail continuum. To be successful, however, we must understand the unique needs of the older learner. This session will inform the growth of participatory arts programs for older adults, addressing:

-The benefits of arts education programs for older adults

-Research findings related to these benefits

-The elder services infrastructure as it relates to the intersection between arts & aging

-Best practices in designing, implementing, evaluating and sustaining arts education programs for older adults alone or in partnership with other organizations; and

-Case studies of effective arts education programs for older adults

During the institute, you'll participate in first-hand model arts activities that have proven successful with older adults.
